NATIONAL RECOGNITION · LOCAL ACTION

Working across the community

Wildfire risk does not stop at a property line.

Conditions on individual lots, shared drainage swales, roadsides and neighboring lands can affect the wider community. The Firewise Committee helps the association look at that larger picture.

The committee identifies priorities, coordinates vegetation-management projects, shares reliable information, pursues funding opportunities and gives residents meaningful ways to participate.

  1. LATEST PROJECT

Clearing fire-prone vegetation from community drainage swales

WCE volunteers, committee members and maintenance staff worked together to remove fire-prone vegetation from community drainage swales.

    60Cubic yards removed
    5.85Tons of green waste
    6,000Approximate square feet cleared
    188Volunteer hours

Eight volunteers contributed to the project. A community owner provided space for one dumpster, and the work was supported by a Hawaiʻi Wildfire Management Organization funding opportunity.

WHAT THE COMMITTEE DOES

Planning, education and practical work

Firewise USA® recognition is maintained through continuing local participation and documented risk-reduction activity.

01

Community projects

Support vegetation removal, drainage-swale clearing, green-waste events and other coordinated work that reduces hazardous fuel.

02

Education and resources

Connect residents with useful information about defensible space, fire-prone vegetation, home resilience, insurance and personal preparedness.

03

Partnerships and funding

Work with organizations such as HWMO to identify grants, cost-sharing programs, training and technical assistance.

04

Resident participation

Organize work days and educational activities that give owners practical ways to support community risk reduction.

EVERYONE HAS A ROLE

Help sustain the work

Owners can contribute by maintaining their property, reducing accumulations of dry or fire-prone vegetation, participating in community projects, attending educational events and following current guidance from wildfire professionals.

Firewise work reduces risk, but it cannot eliminate it.
